For a more versatile sports bra - multiway is the answer.

Multiway sports bras have more than one type of back, normally a scooped back and a racer back option by adjusting the shoulder straps, either by unhooking the straps completely at the back and crossing them over (Pure Lime or Berlei) or through a clip (Panache) which pulls the straps together.

They are also useful if you petite as crossing over the straps can significantly reduce the length of the shoulder straps.  And they are great to ensure that your sports bra fits under tops with different shape backs.
